Leonardo da Vinci tried to imitate birds’ flight with his ornithopter designs.
An ornithopter is a flying machine that produces lift through the flapping motion of wings. Leonardo studied bird anatomy, wing structure, balance, and air movement in numerous notebooks. His designs attempted to transfer the muscular action of a bird to a machine operated by a human pilot, usually through pedals, levers, or cables.
Leonardo’s ornithopters were never proven capable of carrying a person in sustained flight. Human muscles cannot provide the same power-to-weight ratio as the flight muscles of birds, and the proposed mechanisms were too heavy and inefficient. The ornithopter is therefore different from a fixed-wing airplane, whose wings remain rigid while forward motion creates lift. Leonardo’s work remains important because it connected close observation of living animals with mechanical experimentation.
