What animal is the goddess Bastet most associated with?

The story behind the answer

What animal is the goddess Bastet most associated with? The answer is the cat. Bastet became famous as an Egyptian cat goddess, often represented as a domestic cat or as a woman with a cat’s head.

Her earlier form was more formidable: Bastet was depicted as a lioness or lioness-headed woman and shared protective, solar qualities with goddesses such as Sekhmet. Over time, especially by the Third Intermediate Period, her imagery shifted toward the gentler domestic cat. This change reflected her growing associations with household protection, motherhood, fertility, and childbirth.

Cats were valued in Egypt because they controlled mice, rats, and snakes near homes and grain stores. Their protective behavior and care for kittens helped reinforce Bastet’s maternal image. Small bronze and stone figures of seated cats, sometimes wearing jewelry or sacred collars, were offered in her worship.

Bastet’s principal cult centre was Bubastis in the Nile Delta. Festivals there attracted large crowds, and cats were connected with her sacred cult. She is sometimes confused with Sekhmet: both could protect the king and embody dangerous power, but Bastet increasingly represented the more benevolent, feline aspect.
