What animal is the emblem of Cartier?

The story behind the answer

The animal emblem of Cartier is the panther.

Cartier’s panther, or “La Panthère,” is one of the most recognisable symbols in luxury jewellery. The spotted feline first appeared in Cartier design in 1914, when its motif was used on a watch. It later became a recurring subject in brooches, rings, watches and high jewellery.

Jeanne Toussaint played a decisive role in turning the animal into a major Cartier icon. She joined the company in the 1910s and became director of fine jewellery in 1933. Nicknamed “La Panthère,” Toussaint helped move the design from a flat, spotted pattern toward bold three-dimensional sculptures using diamonds, onyx, emeralds and other gemstones.

The panther is sometimes confused with the leopard because the animals resemble one another and everyday speech can blur the distinction. Cartier’s established branding, however, uses panther: “Panthère de Cartier.” The brand has also depicted other animals, but the panther is the signature emblem most closely associated with Cartier’s identity and high-jewellery tradition.
