What animal-inspired flying-machine concept did Leonardo da Vinci sketch with flapping wings?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci sketched an ornithopter, a flying-machine concept with flapping wings.

The word ornithopter comes from Greek roots meaning “bird wing.” Leonardo studied birds, bats, and the mechanics of flight in notebooks including the Codex on the Flight of Birds. His designs sought to reproduce powered flight by moving wings rather than by using a fixed lifting surface.

Some of his ornithopter concepts placed a human pilot inside a frame and used pedals, levers, or other mechanisms to drive the wings. The designs were imaginative but faced a fundamental problem: human muscles cannot supply enough power for a practical, human-sized flapping aircraft. Leonardo also recognized that gliding and maintaining balance required careful control.

An ornithopter is not the same as a helicopter or an airplane. Modern ornithopters are usually small experimental or robotic machines, while Leonardo’s sketches remained unbuilt concepts. His work nevertheless contributed detailed observations about anatomy, airflow, and the relationship between wing shape and motion.
