What animal did Ibrahim sacrifice instead of his son?

The story behind the answer

According to Islamic tradition, Ibrahim sacrificed a ram instead of his son.

The story describes God testing Ibrahim’s willingness to obey a command to sacrifice his son. Just as Ibrahim was about to comply, divine intervention stopped the sacrifice, and a ram was provided as a substitute. Muslims commemorate this act of devotion during Eid al-Adha through the ritual sacrifice of permitted livestock.

The Qur’an describes the substitute as a “great sacrifice” but does not explicitly identify the animal as a ram. Later Islamic tradition and widely taught accounts specify a ram, making it the standard answer in a general trivia question. The son is generally identified in Islamic interpretation as Isma'il, or Ishmael, although the Qur’an does not name him in the sacrifice passage.

The story is sometimes confused with the Biblical Binding of Isaac, in which Isaac is the intended son. Eid al-Adha’s Islamic narrative emphasizes obedience, trust in God, and the willingness of both father and son to submit to divine command.
