What animal appears on the Levi's two-horse logo?

The story behind the answer

Horses appear on Levi’s famous Two Horse logo.

The design shows two horses pulling in opposite directions on a pair of waist overalls. It was created to communicate the strength and durability of Levi Strauss & Co.’s riveted clothing, suggesting that even two powerful animals could not tear the garment apart.

Levi’s introduced the Two Horse trademark in 1886, as the company’s patent for riveted clothing was approaching expiration. The image offered a memorable way to distinguish the brand from competitors and to make the product recognizable to customers who might not read English. People could reportedly ask for “those pants with the two horses.”

The animals are specifically horses, not oxen, mules, or bulls. The logo is also distinct from Levi’s later red tab and batwing wordmark. Before “Levi’s” became the company’s registered trademark in 1928, the jeans were widely associated with the name “Two Horse Brand.” The horse emblem has remained one of the brand’s oldest and most recognizable visual marks.
