What animal appears in the World Wildlife Fund logo?
Answer
Giant panda
Answer
Giant panda
The World Wildlife Fund logo shows a giant panda. The black-and-white animal was selected because pandas were already widely admired and because their distinctive coloring worked effectively in a simple black-and-white drawing.
The original panda was based on Chi Chi, a giant panda that arrived at London Zoo in 1958. Artist and conservationist Sir Peter Scott adapted the design for the organization founded in 1961. The panda became a symbol of wildlife conservation rather than a logo representing only one species or one country.
The organization was originally called the World Wildlife Fund and used WWF internationally. In 1986, it changed its English name to World Wide Fund for Nature, although the initials WWF remained. The logo is therefore often associated with both names, and its animal is specifically the giant panda, not the unrelated red panda.
