What alternate abbreviation for V-J Day means “Victory in the Pacific Day”?

The story behind the answer

The alternate abbreviation for “Victory in the Pacific Day” is V-P Day.

V-P Day is another name for the day commemorating Japan's defeat and surrender in World War II. The more familiar term is V-J Day, meaning Victory over Japan Day. Both labels appeared in wartime and postwar usage, although V-J Day became the dominant expression in English.

The date connected with the term can vary. In Japan, the emperor's surrender announcement was broadcast on August 15, 1945. Because of time zones, the announcement was heard on August 14 in much of the United States and other parts of the Americas. The formal surrender document was then signed on September 2 in Tokyo Bay.

V-P Day should not be confused with V-E Day, which commemorates Germany's surrender in Europe on May 8, 1945. The two abbreviations identify the two major theaters in which World War II ended. V-J and V-P both refer to the Pacific victory over Japan.
