What Allied declaration outlined the terms Japan accepted when surrendering in 1945?

The story behind the answer

The Potsdam Declaration outlined the terms Japan accepted when surrendering in 1945.

The United States, the United Kingdom, and China issued the declaration on 26 July 1945 during the Potsdam Conference. It called for the unconditional surrender of Japan’s armed forces and warned of “prompt and utter destruction” if Japan refused.

The document described the intended postwar settlement, including the occupation of Japanese territory, disarmament, punishment of war criminals, and limits on Japanese sovereignty. It also stated that Japan would be allowed to maintain industries capable of supporting a peaceful economy.

The Soviet Union did not initially sign the declaration because it was still neutral in the war against Japan. After the Soviet declaration of war and the atomic bombings, Japan accepted the declaration’s terms. The Instrument of Surrender then made those terms operative.
