What Allied declaration did Japan formally accept in the Japanese Instrument of Surrender?
Answer
Potsdam Declaration
Answer
Potsdam Declaration
Japan formally accepted the Potsdam Declaration in the Japanese Instrument of Surrender.
The United States, the United Kingdom, and China issued the declaration on 26 July 1945, demanding Japan's unconditional surrender. It outlined occupation, disarmament, territorial limits, and the removal of militarist influence from Japanese public life.
The Soviet Union was not an original signatory because it was still formally neutral toward Japan when the declaration was issued. After the Soviet Union entered the war against Japan in August, the surrender document referred to the declaration as the Allied basis for Japan's capitulation.
Japan's leaders debated the terms before accepting them. Hirohito's 15 August broadcast announced acceptance to the public, and the 2 September instrument converted that decision into a formal signed surrender.
