What aircraft-control principle did the Wright brothers’ 1902 glider establish?
Answer
Three-axis control
Answer
Three-axis control
The Wright brothers’ 1902 glider established the practical principle of three-axis control.
The system allowed a pilot to control roll, pitch, and yaw independently. The brothers used wing-warping to control roll, an elevator to control pitch, and a movable rear rudder to control yaw. This combination solved a central problem that had limited earlier glider designs.
The 1902 glider was tested at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Its successful control system became the foundation for the powered Flyer used in 1903 and for later Wright aircraft.
Three-axis control is sometimes confused with simply “wing-warping.” Wing-warping was one part of the system; the broader achievement was coordinated control around all three rotational axes.
