A quinceañera traditionally celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday.
The Spanish word quinceañera refers both to the young woman reaching this milestone and, commonly, to the birthday celebration itself. The event often combines a religious service, a formal entrance, symbolic rituals, a meal, music, and dancing.
Fifteen is significant because the celebration traditionally marks a transition from childhood toward young womanhood. It is not legally an adulthood ceremony, and customs vary widely by family, country, religion, and budget. Some families hold a large formal party, while others choose a smaller gathering or another type of observance.
The tradition is especially associated with Mexico and Latin American communities, but quinceañeras are also celebrated by families across the United States and elsewhere. The related term quince años literally means “fifteen years,” connecting the event directly to the honoree’s age.
