A quinceañera traditionally commemorates a girl’s 15th birthday.
The Spanish word quinceañera refers both to the celebrant and, by extension, to the birthday celebration. The number 15 is central because the event marks a symbolic transition from childhood toward young womanhood in many Latin American and Hispanic communities.
The tradition is not identical everywhere. Families may emphasize a religious ceremony, a reception, formal clothing, music, dancing, or a combination of these elements. Some celebrations are modest, while others are elaborate.
A quinceañera is sometimes compared with a sweet sixteen, but the two traditions have different cultural histories. The quinceañera’s defining age is 15, even when local customs adapt the format or include secular rather than religious observances.
