What act by Prometheus led Zeus to send Pandora into the human world?

The story behind the answer

Prometheus’s theft of fire led Zeus to send Pandora into the human world.

In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a Titan who favors humanity. He steals fire from the gods and gives it to mortals, enabling cooking, metalworking, and other technologies in later interpretations. Zeus responds by arranging a punishment that affects both Prometheus and humankind.

Hesiod’s account presents Pandora as part of that punishment. Zeus has Hephaestus create her, and the gods furnish her with qualities before she is sent to Epimetheus. The vessel associated with Pandora then releases the forces responsible for human suffering.

The fire episode appears in several ancient traditions, with differences in the details and in Prometheus’s motivation. The specific connection between the stolen fire and Pandora is especially prominent in Hesiod’s Works and Days. It should not be confused with the separate punishment of Prometheus, who is chained and tormented by an eagle.
