What accident caused Antoni Gaudí's death in 1926?

The story behind the answer

The accident that caused Antoni Gaudí’s death was being hit by a tram.

On 7 June 1926, Gaudí was walking along Barcelona’s Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes on his way to the church of Sant Felip Neri. A number 30 tram struck him, leaving him unconscious and seriously injured.

Gaudí’s shabby clothing and unassuming appearance reportedly led passers-by to mistake him for a poor or homeless man. Because he carried no identification, he did not immediately receive the level of attention people might have expected for a famous architect. He was eventually taken by taxi to the Santa Creu Hospital.

The chaplain of the Sagrada Família recognised him the next day, but his injuries were too severe. Gaudí died on 10 June 1926 and was buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Família, the monumental church to which he had devoted his final years.
