What accessory did Zippo Manufacturing Company introduce in 1933?
Answer
Cigarette Lighter
Answer
Cigarette Lighter
Zippo Manufacturing Company introduced its cigarette lighter in 1933. The first Zippo was made in Bradford, Pennsylvania, by George G. Blaisdell, who had founded the company the previous year.
Blaisdell drew inspiration from an Austrian lighter made by IMCO, but redesigned it with Zippo's distinctive hinged lid and wind-resistant flame. The name “Zippo” was chosen because Blaisdell liked the sound of the word “zipper.” The first Zippo lighter was produced in early 1933, and the company received its U.S. patent in 1936.
Zippo lighters became especially associated with the U.S. military during World War II. Wartime production shifted away from civilian sales, and steel with a black crackle finish was used because brass and other metals were needed for military equipment. The company later became known for collectible designs, commemorative editions, and custom advertising lighters.
