The 2019 live-action Tim Burton film featuring a flying elephant is Dumbo. It reimagines Disney’s 1941 animated classic about a young elephant whose unusually large ears enable him to fly.
In Burton’s version, Dumbo becomes part of a struggling circus run by Max Medici, played by Danny DeVito. Colin Farrell plays Holt Farrier, a returning war veteran who works with his children to care for Dumbo, while Michael Keaton portrays the ambitious entertainment entrepreneur V. A. Vandevere. Eva Green plays aerial performer Colette Marchant.
The film expands the original story with human characters and a new circus-business plot, while retaining Dumbo’s central themes of family, exploitation, and finding strength in a trait others mock. It was written by Ehren Kruger, scored by Danny Elfman, and released theatrically in the United States on March 29, 2019.
