What 1996 Stephen King novel was published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman?

The story behind the answer

The 1996 Stephen King novel published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman was The Regulators. It appeared after King's earlier Bachman identity had been exposed, turning the book's publication into a playful revival of the pseudonym.

The Regulators was released on September 24, 1996, as a companion or “mirror” novel to Desperation, which King published under his own name the same year. Although the two books use many of the same character names, they place those characters in different realities and circumstances.

A famous publishing detail is that the first-edition hardcover covers of The Regulators and Desperation were designed to form one continuous painting when placed side by side. Readers sometimes confuse The Regulators with Thinner or The Running Man, earlier Bachman novels, but those were published before the 1996 return of the pseudonym.
