What 1991 Scorsese film is a remake of a 1962 film?

The story behind the answer

The 1991 Martin Scorsese film that remakes a 1962 film is Cape Fear.

Scorsese’s Cape Fear reworks J. Lee Thompson’s 1962 psychological thriller, which itself was adapted from John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners. The remake stars Robert De Niro as the vengeful ex-convict Max Cady, Nick Nolte as attorney Sam Bowden, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis.

The two films share the central story of Cady stalking and seeking revenge against Bowden, but Scorsese’s version changes important details. In the 1991 film, Bowden is portrayed as a former defense attorney who deliberately mishandled Cady’s case, giving Cady a stronger personal grievance.

The remake also features Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Martin Balsam—stars or key performers from the 1962 film—in cameo appearances. Bernard Herrmann’s original score was adapted and re-orchestrated by Elmer Bernstein. Cape Fear became Scorsese’s first film to earn more than $100 million worldwide.
