The 1984 arcade game inspired by the Pac-Man animated TV series was Pac-Land.
Namco developed Pac-Land after seeing the success of Hanna-Barbera’s American Pac-Man cartoon. The game was designed to capture the show’s bright colors, rounded character designs, and animated presentation rather than simply reproduce the black-background maze format of the original arcade game.
Pac-Land is a platform game in which Pac-Man travels through scrolling stages to return a lost fairy to Fairyland. Players avoid the Ghost Gang and environmental hazards such as falling logs and water-spewing fire hydrants, while Power Pellets still let Pac-Man turn the tables on his pursuers.
Hanna-Barbera did not develop the game; Namco licensed elements of the series and assigned development to programmer Yoshihiro Kishimoto. The game’s unusual button-based running controls were influenced by Konami’s Track & Field. Pac-Land is often mixed up with Pac-Attack or Pac-Mania, but those are separate later entries and were not the 1984 cartoon-inspired platformer.
