What 1978 documentary directed by Scorsese features The Band's farewell concert?

The story behind the answer

The 1978 Scorsese documentary featuring The Band’s farewell concert is The Last Waltz.

The film records The Band’s major concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on November 25, 1976. Billed as the group’s farewell concert appearance, the event brought together The Band and an unusually large lineup of guests, including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Ringo Starr, and Emmylou Harris.

Scorsese was brought onto the project after producer Jonathan Taplin and musician Robbie Robertson suggested him as director. In addition to concert footage, the movie includes interviews with members of The Band and performances filmed later on a studio soundstage. This means not every moment shown in the film comes from the Thanksgiving-night concert itself.

The Last Waltz is often described as one of the landmark concert documentaries. The original concert featured The Band’s classic lineup, and the film helped preserve the group’s final performance under that name. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2019.
