What 1978 concert film did Scorsese direct for The Band?

The story behind the answer

The Last Waltz is the 1978 concert film that Martin Scorsese directed for The Band. It documents the group’s farewell concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on November 25, 1976, performed on American Thanksgiving Day.

The concert brought The Band together with more than a dozen prominent guests, including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Ringo Starr, and the Staple Singers. Scorsese shaped the footage into more than a simple concert record by combining live performances with interviews and additional studio sequences.

The film’s title refers to the advertised farewell appearance, although The Band continued performing in later forms. Stop Making Sense is another landmark concert film, but it was directed by Jonathan Demme and documents Talking Heads. Woodstock and Monterey Pop are also major music documentaries, but neither is the Scorsese film associated with The Band.
