The 1956 John Ford western starring John Wayne and famed for its Monument Valley scenery is The Searchers.
Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran who spends years searching for his abducted niece, Debbie, accompanied by her adopted brother Martin Pawley. The story turns a conventional rescue quest into a darker examination of obsession, racism, family, and the limits of belonging.
Although the film is primarily set in northwestern Texas, much of it was filmed in Monument Valley on the Arizona–Utah border. John Ford had already used the landscape in several westerns, and The Searchers helped make its red-rock mesas and enormous horizons central to the visual mythology of the American West.
The movie was directed by Ford from a screenplay by Frank S. Nugent, adapted from Alan Le May’s 1954 novel. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance also reunited Ford and Wayne and used western imagery, but it was released in 1962. The Searchers was filmed in VistaVision and Eastmancolor.
