What 1952 western starring Gary Cooper earned him a Best Actor Oscar?

The story behind the answer

The 1952 western starring Gary Cooper that earned him the Best Actor Oscar is High Noon.

Directed by Fred Zinnemann and produced by Stanley Kramer, the film casts Cooper as Marshal Will Kane. Kane is preparing to leave town with his new wife when he learns that Frank Miller, an outlaw he once arrested, is returning on the noon train with three gunmen. Although Kane asks the townspeople for help, fear and resentment leave him to face the gang largely alone.

The story unfolds in near real time, intensifying the ticking-clock structure. Its themes of duty, isolation and moral courage also gave it political significance: screenwriter Carl Foreman's script has often been read as an allegory for the Hollywood blacklist, though the film works as a character-driven western even without that context.

High Noon received seven Academy Award nominations and won four, including Best Actor for Cooper, film editing, dramatic score and the song “Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin’.” Cooper was working in Europe and accepted the Oscar in absentia through John Wayne.
