What 1940 Disney film is an animated concert featuring classical music?

The story behind the answer

The 1940 Disney film that is an animated concert featuring classical music is Fantasia.

Rather than telling one continuous story, Fantasia presents eight animated segments set to orchestral works. The program includes Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, and the famous Mickey Mouse segment The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Composer and critic Deems Taylor introduces the pieces as master of ceremonies, while Leopold Stokowski conducts most of the music.

The project grew from The Sorcerer's Apprentice, which Disney had planned as an expensive showcase for Mickey Mouse. When the short became too costly to release by itself, Disney expanded the idea into a feature-length “concert” film. Fantasia also pioneered Fantasound, a multichannel audio system that made it the first commercial film presented in stereo.

Its original roadshow release began at New York's Broadway Theatre on November 13, 1940. The film was initially presented with reserved seating and an intermission, making it closer to a concert experience than a standard cartoon program. Fantasia is distinct from the later sequel Fantasia 2000.
