What 1908 explosion in Siberia is believed to have been a meteoroid air burst?

The story behind the answer

The 1908 explosion in Siberia believed to have been a meteoroid air burst was the Tunguska event. It occurred on June 30, 1908, near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia.

A stony asteroid or meteoroid, estimated at roughly 50–60 metres across, appears to have exploded several kilometres above the ground instead of striking Earth’s surface. The blast flattened and scorched about 2,150 square kilometres of Siberian taiga, yet investigators found no conventional impact crater.

The event’s remoteness meant that detailed scientific investigation began only years later. Estimates of its energy vary, but modern calculations commonly place it in the range of several megatons of TNT. “Barringer Crater” and “Chicxulub impact” are genuine impact sites, but unlike Tunguska they left major craters; Krakatoa was a volcanic eruption, not a space-rock event.
