Siege of Yorktown
Answer
Siege of Yorktown
The Siege of Yorktown was the decisive American victory before the peace celebrated by America250.
The siege took place in Virginia from September 28 to October 19, 1781. American and French forces under George Washington and the Comte de Rochambeau trapped the British army commanded by Charles Cornwallis.
French naval forces helped prevent Cornwallis from receiving effective relief by defeating a British fleet at the Battle of the Chesapeake. After sustained bombardment and the capture of key redoubts, Cornwallis surrendered on October 19.
Yorktown did not immediately end the war, and fighting continued in other locations. However, the surrender weakened political support for continuing the conflict in Britain and led to peace negotiations that produced the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
