What 1774 agreement organized the colonial boycott of British goods before the American Revolution?

The story behind the answer

The Continental Association organized the colonial boycott of British goods in 1774 before the American Revolution.

The First Continental Congress adopted the agreement on October 20, 1774. It called for nonimportation of British goods and created local committees to inspect trade and enforce compliance in the colonies.

The measure was a collective response to the Intolerable Acts, which Britain had enacted after the Boston Tea Party. It also showed that the colonies were developing mechanisms for cooperation even before declaring independence.

The Continental Association is sometimes confused with the Suffolk Resolves. The Suffolk Resolves were an earlier set of Massachusetts recommendations that influenced Congress, while the Continental Association was the broader intercolonial boycott agreement. Hostilities in April 1775 disrupted the boycott’s planned operation.
