What 1495 machine did Leonardo da Vinci design with a mechanical knight inside?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight, commonly called Leonardo's robot, in 1495.

The machine was created for a pageant at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Leonardo's drawings show an armored figure operated by a system of cables and pulleys. The mechanism could reportedly sit, stand, move its arms, and move its head and jaw.

The robot was not an electronic robot in the modern sense. It was a humanoid automaton powered by mechanical parts, and the surviving evidence comes mainly from Leonardo's notes and reconstructed interpretations of them.

In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo's drawings. Later research connected the design with Leonardo's study of anatomy and mechanical motion. The project demonstrates how Renaissance court entertainment could combine engineering, sculpture, theatrical design, and military technology.
