Waldorf salad was first created at which New York hotel?
Answer
Waldorf-Astoria hotel
Answer
Waldorf-Astoria hotel
Waldorf salad was first created at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City. The dish takes its name from the hotel, where it was introduced in the late 19th century.
The salad is traditionally made with apples, celery and mayonnaise, often served on lettuce. Oscar Tschirky, the Waldorf-Astoria’s maître d’hôtel, is widely credited with developing or inspiring the recipe. It was associated with a charity ball held on March 13, 1896, honoring St. Mary’s Hospital for Children.
The original preparation was simpler than many modern versions: it contained apples, celery and mayonnaise but no walnuts. Nuts had been added by the time the recipe appeared in The Rector Cook Book in 1928. Grapes, raisins, yogurt-based dressings and chicken are later variations, so a modern Waldorf salad may look quite different from the hotel’s first version.
