Victoria Falls is on which river?
Answer
Zambezi River
Answer
Zambezi River
Victoria Falls is on the Zambezi River.
The waterfall lies on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, where the Zambezi plunges across a broad basalt plateau into a deep gorge. With a width of about 1,708 meters and a height of roughly 108 meters, it forms one of the world’s largest sheets of falling water. Its local names include Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “Thundering Smoke,” and Shungu Namutitima, or “Boiling Water.”
The river’s seasonal flow strongly changes the appearance of the falls. Floodwaters usually peak around April after the rainy season, producing enormous spray, while lower water later in the year reveals more of the islands and separate cataracts. At suitable times, moonlight can create a moonbow in the spray.
Local communities knew the falls long before European exploration. Scottish missionary David Livingstone saw them in November 1855 and popularized the name Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria. The Zambezi continues eastward through a series of gorges before reaching Lake Kariba and eventually flowing into the Indian Ocean.
