Usain Bolt won the 100m and 200m Olympic gold at three consecutive Games; at which 2016 host city did he complete this 'triple triple'?

The story behind the answer

Usain Bolt completed his Olympic “triple triple” at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He won the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4×100-metre relay at three consecutive Olympics: Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

In Rio, Bolt won the 100m in 9.81 seconds and the 200m in 19.78 seconds. Jamaica then won the 4×100m relay, with Bolt running the anchor leg, giving him his ninth Olympic gold medal at the time. The achievement made him the first athlete to complete the same three-event sprint sweep at three successive Games.

The phrase “triple triple” can cause confusion because it includes the relay as well as the two individual races. Bolt’s 2008 relay gold was later stripped after Nesta Carter’s doping violation, meaning Bolt’s officially recognised Olympic total was subsequently reduced to eight gold medals. Rio was nevertheless the host city where the historic sweep was completed.
