Tom Cruise won a $10 million judgment against a Hollywood man for telling what lie?

The story behind the answer

Tom Cruise won a $10 million judgment after a man falsely claimed that he had been Tom Cruise’s lover.

The claim appeared in a French magazine, Actustar, in connection with Chad Slater, a porn actor who used the stage name Kyle Bradford. Slater was alleged to have claimed that he and Cruise had a homosexual affair and that the relationship contributed to the breakup of Cruise’s marriage to Nicole Kidman.

Cruise filed a defamation lawsuit in 2001 seeking $100 million. Slater did not actively defend the case, and a Los Angeles judge entered a default judgment in late 2002. Cruise’s lawyers later announced the $10 million judgment in January 2003. They also said Cruise intended to donate any money recovered to charity.

This case is sometimes confused with a separate lawsuit involving Michael Davis, who claimed to possess videotapes showing Cruise with another man. That action was dropped after Davis admitted the videotape claim was false. The two cases involved similar rumors but different defendants and legal proceedings.
