Thipsamai, a Pad Thai restaurant, is in which city?

The story behind the answer

Thipsamai, the famous Pad Thai restaurant, is in Bangkok.

Its original restaurant is on Maha Chai Road in Samran Rat, a central Bangkok neighborhood also known as Pratu Phi, or “Ghost Gate.” The restaurant is particularly known for Pad Thai made with sen chan rice noodles and a house prawn oil that contributes to its distinctive flavor and orange color.

Thipsamai began as a street stall in the 1950s and moved into a permanent storefront in 1966. It was named after Samai Baisamut, one of the family members who helped establish the business. The restaurant’s reputation grew through word of mouth and its association with Bangkok’s street-food culture.

A popular story links its rise to Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, but historians have questioned parts of that account. The location itself is not disputed: Thipsamai is a Bangkok institution, not a restaurant in Ayutthaya, Phuket or Chiang Mai.
