In the film, the character Jack Torrance kills—but who survives in the book—is Dick Hallorann, the Overlook Hotel’s head chef.
Hallorann shares Danny Torrance’s psychic ability, known as “the shining,” and recognizes that Danny is in serious danger at the Overlook. After receiving Danny’s psychic call for help, Hallorann returns to the hotel. In Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, Jack attacks him with an axe in the lobby and kills him almost immediately after his arrival.
Stephen King’s 1977 novel takes a different path. Jack attacks Hallorann with a roque mallet, seriously injuring him and knocking him unconscious, but Hallorann survives. He later helps Wendy and Danny escape the Overlook and appears again in King’s sequel, Doctor Sleep.
A common mix-up is confusing Hallorann with Delbert Grady, the former caretaker who murdered his family and appears as a ghost in the film. Lloyd is the mysterious bartender, while Danny is Jack’s son and the person Hallorann is trying to save. The film also changes Jack’s fate: he freezes in the hedge maze, whereas the novel’s Overlook is destroyed in a boiler explosion.
