The United States Declaration of Independence was adopted at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
In 1776, the building was known as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress met there when it debated and adopted the Declaration of Independence. The building was later renamed Independence Hall because of its association with the founding of the United States.
Independence Hall is part of Independence National Historical Park and stands in Philadelphia’s historic district. It also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, linking the Declaration with the later creation of the United States Constitution.
A common confusion involves Carpenters’ Hall, where the First Continental Congress met in 1774. The Declaration itself was debated and adopted in the Pennsylvania State House, not at that earlier meeting place.
