The Twenty-Four Histories are a traditional collection of official dynastic histories documenting China’s rulers, states, institutions, and major events. Their coverage stretches from legendary early rulers and ancient dynasties through the Ming dynasty, which ended in 1644.
The tradition draws heavily on the model established by Sima Qian in the Records of the Grand Historian, written during the Han dynasty. Later dynasties commonly commissioned scholars to compile an official history of the preceding dynasty, using court records and other surviving sources. This helped a new ruling house present itself as the legitimate successor in Chinese political tradition.
The collection was formalized in the Qing period. A complete set assembled under the Qianlong Emperor contained 24 works, totaling 3,213 volumes and roughly 40 million Chinese characters. The Qing dynasty itself is not part of the traditional Twenty-Four Histories; the History of Ming is the final standard history in the set.
