The Spanish term “quinceañera” literally refers to a girl who is fifteen years old.
The word is formed from quince, meaning “fifteen,” and a feminine form related to año, “year.” In everyday English, quinceañera can mean either the celebrant or the elaborate birthday observance held for her.
The related masculine term is quinceañero, although usage differs by region and some communities use broader or newer forms for boys. The feminine noun became especially prominent because the traditional ceremony historically focused on a girl’s public transition into a new stage of life.
A quinceañera is not simply a translation of “birthday party.” Its associations with family presentation, faith, community, and formal celebration give the word a specific cultural meaning beyond the number fifteen.
