The Sounion Kouros stands approximately how tall in meters?

The story behind the answer

The Sounion Kouros stands approximately 3.05 meters tall.

Carved around 600 BCE, this marble figure is an early example of the kouros type: a nude, idealized young man standing frontally with one leg advanced. It was made from Naxian marble and probably served as a votive offering to Poseidon, whose sanctuary stood at Cape Sounion.

The statue was discovered in 1906, buried near the Temple of Poseidon with fragments of other offerings. The damaged figure had lost substantial portions of its legs, arms, and face, but restoration returned it to its estimated original height. Its larger-than-life scale helped communicate the importance of the dedication.

The Sounion Kouros also preserves features typical of early Archaic Greek sculpture, including rigid symmetry, clenched fists, stylized muscles, braided hair, and the so-called archaic smile. Its advanced left leg reflects Egyptian artistic influence while also anticipating the more natural movement of later Greek sculpture.
