The solar eclipse accompanying the 2026 Perseid peak belongs to which Saros series?

The story behind the answer

The solar eclipse accompanying the 2026 Perseid peak belongs to Saros series 126.

A Saros is a repeating pattern of solar and lunar eclipses. Eclipses in one Saros series occur at intervals of about 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours, with the extra fraction shifting the visible path westward around Earth.

The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse is listed as member 48 of Saros 126. The same series includes earlier and later eclipses, including the August 1, 2008 eclipse and the August 23, 2044 eclipse.

The Perseid shower and the eclipse are separate phenomena. The Perseids are produced by cometary debris entering Earth’s atmosphere, while the eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun.
