The Rowley Shoals coral reefs belong to which Australian state?
Answer
Western Australia
Answer
Western Australia
The Rowley Shoals coral reefs belong to Western Australia.
The Rowley Shoals are three remote, atoll-like coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, off Australia’s northwestern coast and west of Broome. Although their reef rims have little land and no permanent population, their location is within the state of Western Australia.
The group consists of Mermaid Reef, Clerke Reef and Imperieuse Reef. Mermaid Reef is protected in an Australian marine park, while Clerke and Imperieuse Reefs form the Rowley Shoals Marine Park managed by Western Australia. This division can cause confusion: the reefs are associated with both Commonwealth and state conservation programs, but the quiz asks for their Australian state affiliation.
The shoals also have a long maritime history. Captain Phillip Parker King named them in 1818 after Captain Rowley, who had sighted Imperieuse Reef in 1800. Indonesian and Roti Island fishermen visited the reefs well before formal Australian surveys, harvesting sea cucumbers, turtle shell and trochus shell. Geologically, the shoals are remnants of a much larger Miocene barrier-reef system that was later submerged by tectonic subsidence.
