The Persian and what other Gulf borders the United Arab Emirates?

The story behind the answer

The Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman border the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE’s northern and western coastline faces the Persian Gulf, while its eastern coastline reaches the Gulf of Oman. This gives the country an important maritime position near the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Indian Ocean.

Most of the UAE’s coastline, including the shores of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah, lies along the Persian Gulf. Fujairah, on the country’s east coast, faces the Gulf of Oman directly. Sharjah also has territory on the east coast through the exclave of Khor Fakkan.

A frequent source of confusion is Oman’s geography. The UAE does not border the Arabian Sea directly; the Gulf of Oman lies between the UAE’s east coast and the Arabian Sea. The strategically important Musandam Peninsula, part of Oman, projects into the Strait of Hormuz near the UAE’s northeastern coast.
