The Panama Canal links which two oceans?

The story behind the answer

The Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The 82-kilometre waterway crosses the Isthmus of Panama and allows ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific without sailing around the southern tip of South America. Its locks raise vessels to Gatun Lake and then lower them again on the opposite side.

The canal opened in 1914 after decades of difficult construction. France began the first major attempt in the 1880s, and the United States later completed the project. Panama assumed full control of the canal on 31 December 1999.

Although the canal’s Pacific entrance lies east of its Atlantic entrance because of Panama’s shape, the waterway still connects the two oceans. The expanded canal opened in 2016, adding larger Neopanamax lock chambers for modern cargo ships.
