The Painted Desert is primarily in which U.S. state?

The story behind the answer

The Painted Desert is primarily in the U.S. state of Arizona.

This vividly colored badlands region stretches across northeastern Arizona, from near the Grand Canyon toward Petrified Forest National Park. It covers roughly 7,500 square miles and is especially famous for bands of red, orange, yellow, gray, lavender, and purple sediment.

Its colors come largely from exposed layers of the Triassic Chinle Formation. Iron and manganese compounds tint the siltstone, mudstone, and shale, while erosion by wind and water sculpts the soft layers into mesas, gullies, and other badland formations. Silica-rich volcanic ash also helped preserve the area's famous petrified wood.

The name is often associated with Petrified Forest National Park, but the Painted Desert is a broader geographic region extending into the Navajo Nation. Another common confusion is that “Painted Desert” can refer to places in Australia or to a Las Vegas neighborhood; in U.S. geography trivia, however, the intended answer is Arizona.
