The Nike of Paionios was erected at which sanctuary?
Answer
Olympia
Answer
Olympia
The Nike of Paionios was erected at the sanctuary of Olympia.
The monument honored Nike, the Greek personification of victory, and stood near the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. The winged goddess was shown descending dramatically onto a three-sided pyramid-shaped base, creating the impression that she had just arrived from the sky. The statue was made by the sculptor Paionios of Mende, whose name gives the work its modern title.
It was probably dedicated around 425 BC, after a Greek victory in the Peloponnesian War. The exact dedicators and military event have been debated, but the monument clearly connected victory with divine favor. Its original height, including the base, was roughly 8.5 metres.
Olympia was not merely the birthplace of an athletic tradition; it was a major pan-Hellenic religious sanctuary dedicated chiefly to Zeus. Dodona was another important Zeus sanctuary, Delphi was associated especially with Apollo, and Epidauros was famous for the healing cult of Asklepios. None of those sites was the home of the Nike of Paionios.
