The most popular car color in the USA for 2019 was white. Automotive color reports typically measure newly produced or sold vehicles rather than every car registered on American roads, but the result was consistent: white led the market. Axalta’s 2019 report placed white first in North America at about 38%, ahead of black and gray, while BASF also identified white as North America’s leading automotive color.
White’s popularity is partly practical. It reflects light, can make a vehicle appear cooler in strong sun, and generally shows less fine dust than darker paint. Manufacturers also offer many variations, including solid white, pearl white, and metallic or effect finishes, so “white” covers a surprisingly broad design range.
The next most popular choices were black, gray, and silver. Together, these neutral or achromatic colors dominated the market, while blue and red remained the leading colorful alternatives. A common mix-up is confusing the most popular color for new vehicles with the color most common in the entire existing vehicle fleet; those measurements can produce different percentages.
