The metal band Sepultura originated in which country?

The story behind the answer

The metal band Sepultura originated in Brazil. Max and Igor Cavalera formed the group in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, in 1984, making Sepultura one of the most internationally successful metal bands to emerge from South America.

The band’s name comes from the Portuguese word for “grave.” Sepultura’s early recordings, including Morbid Visions (1986) and Schizophrenia (1987), drew heavily on extreme metal, while Beneath the Remains (1989) established their international reputation. Their later albums Arise, Chaos A.D., and Roots expanded their sound into thrash, groove, alternative, and Brazilian-influenced metal.

A common mix-up is assuming Sepultura originated in the United States or Europe because its breakthrough came through international touring and Roadrunner Records. Although the band later spent significant time abroad, its origin is specifically Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Sepultura is also notable for helping bring Brazilian metal into the global mainstream.
