The Ludovisi Gaul is also known by what alternative title?

The story behind the answer

The Ludovisi Gaul is also known as The Gaul and His Wife. The title describes the statue’s central action: a defeated Galatian warrior supports his dead wife while preparing to take his own life rather than be captured.

The marble group is a Roman copy, probably from the early second century CE, of a lost Hellenistic bronze associated with Pergamon’s victory monuments over the Galatians. The original is often linked to the Pergamene sculptor Epigonus and to the reign of Attalus I, whose victories occurred in the late third century BCE.

The work is frequently called The Galatian Suicide or The Gaul Killing Himself and His Wife. It is not the Dying Gaul, which is a separate sculpture showing a wounded warrior collapsing. The Ludovisi group was rediscovered in Rome during the development of the Villa Ludovisi and is now displayed at the Palazzo Altemps, part of the National Roman Museum.
