The Liberty Bell’s inscription quotes which biblical book?
Answer
Leviticus
Answer
Leviticus
The Liberty Bell’s inscription quotes the biblical book of Leviticus.
Its lettering comes from Leviticus 25:10: “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof.” The Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly ordered the bell in 1751 for the State House in Philadelphia, before the Declaration of Independence was written.
The bell was cast in London by Lester and Pack and arrived in Philadelphia in 1752. It cracked soon after arrival and was recast by local founders John Pass and John Stow. Their names appear on the bell alongside the inscription.
The Liberty Bell became a powerful national symbol during the nineteenth century. Abolitionist groups helped popularize the name “Liberty Bell” in the 1830s. It is often linked to the Declaration’s public reading on July 8, 1776, although there is no contemporary proof that it rang for that event.
