The Liberty Bell’s inscription comes from which book of the Bible?

The story behind the answer

The Liberty Bell’s inscription comes from the Book of Leviticus.

The bell bears the wording “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof.” This is drawn from Leviticus 25:10, which describes the biblical Jubilee year and the proclamation of liberty throughout the land.

Pennsylvania’s colonial assembly commissioned the bell in 1751 for the State House in Philadelphia. The bell was cast in London and later recast twice by local founders John Pass and John Stow after it cracked. Their names appear on the bell beneath the inscription.

The bell became known as the Liberty Bell much later, especially after abolitionists adopted the name in the nineteenth century. It is also linked with the Declaration’s first public reading in Philadelphia, but historians cannot prove that it rang on July 8, 1776.
